The decision to take a one-year time out from the Mill Creek Santa’s Coming to Town Parade was made after some Town Center businesses approached the Mill Creek Town Center Business Association (MCTCBA) with news that the parade was hurting business. In fact, they felt that the parade caused them to lose significant revenues during the busiest and most profitable part of the year. Rotary is the parade’s sponsor and it did not want to continue with the parade if it hurt businesses or if it was not fully supported by businesses. Before finalizing the decision however, MCTCBA sent out a survey to member businesses asking how important the parade was to them and whether they supported holding the parade this year. For the most part, the responses were either non-committal or negative. Ultimately, Rotary felt compelled to listen to local businesses. Rotary’s decision to cancel this year’s parade was fully supported by the MCTCBA Board (which includes the Mill Creek City Manager) and was made with the understanding that Rotary, MCTCBA and the City would assess community reaction and explore ways to hold future parades without negatively impacting businesses.
